Heat input
Arc energy and heat input per EN ISO 1011-1, with the thermal efficiency factor k for the process.
Formula and source
EN ISO 1011-1. For pulsed or waveform-controlled sources, use instantaneous power (ISO/TR 18491) instead of mean U × I.
Preheat by material
Pick a steel grade and plate thickness. The minimum preheat follows EN 1011-2 Annex C, method B, or the Seferian method when the grade is outside method B.
Chemical composition (typical, wt %) — replace with your mill certificate
Values are representative mid-range analyses, not standard maxima. Actual heats vary; for critical work use the certificate (EN 10204 3.1).
Formula and source
Method B is valid for CET 0.20–0.50, d 10–90 mm, HD 1–20 ml/100 g, Q 0.5–4.0 kJ/mm and C 0.05–0.32 % (with further alloy limits). Seferian is an older empirical method that ignores hydrogen and heat input; treat it as a starting point. Cr-Mo creep steels and Q&T grades also have maximum interpass and PWHT requirements in their own standards and supplier data.
Filler metal & shielding gas
Pick the two base metals and the process. The page suggests the usual filler metal (AWS and EN ISO), shielding gas and backing gas, with the reasons that matter for this pair.
How the choice is made
Same material: the matching or standard filler for that grade. Two steels: the filler of the lower-strength, lower-alloy side, with preheat for the more hardenable one. Steel to stainless: an over-alloyed austenitic filler (309L) that stays crack-resistant after dilution. Duplex: nickel-enriched duplex fillers. Aluminium: the filler chosen for crack resistance and strength of the alloy pair. Final selection belongs in the WPS, checked against the consumable maker's data.
Weight & bill of materials
Add beams, plates, pipes and bars with length and quantity. The list totals the weight by item type and grade, and exports to CSV or PDF. The list is kept in this browser.
Formula and source
IPE, HEA, HEB and UPN masses per metre are the EN 10365 nominal values (steel, 7.85 g/cm³) and are scaled by density for other grades. Plate, bar and pipe are calculated from dimensions; box sections use the EN 10219-2 corner radii; angles ignore the root radius (about 1 % low).
Cutting plan
Enter the stock bars and the parts for each profile, or import them from Excel. Each profile is optimised separately for the fewest bars and the least scrap.
Example data. Replace it with your own parts or import an Excel list.
Formula and source
Each bar is filled with the combination of parts that leaves the least remainder.
Weld metal & consumables
Weld cross-section, deposited metal, filler needed, arc time and shielding gas for a given joint length.
Formula and source
Efficiency and deposition rate depend on wire diameter, current and technique; take them from the consumable data sheet when you have it. Stick electrode efficiency here includes stub-end and slag losses.
Heat input check
Choose the two materials, process and filler, enter preheat and welding parameters. The gauge shows the heat input against the window that applies to these materials.
Formula and source
Windows: Strenx from SSAB's recommended t8/5 ranges converted to heat input for the thinnest plate; Hardox lower limit and +25 °C preheat rule from SSAB; carbon and low-alloy steels: minimum heat input for the entered preheat by EN 1011-2 method B, upper limit = method validity (4.0 kJ/mm); duplex and ferritic stainless from supplier / TWI data. Austenitic stainless, martensitic and aluminium have no fixed window here.
